Introduction

The purpose of the Academic Recruitment and Selection Guidelines is to assist units in the search process for new faculty members and other Academic staff. Fair and professional processes are crucial in the selection of the best candidate based on the requirements of the position and the goals of the unit. Good hiring practices support Employment Equity and help achieve equity goals.

The following guidelines should aid units in making selection decisions that are objective and supportable. They will also facilitate consistent practices within the University by ensuring that all academic units adhere to the same procedures outlined here. The Guidelines are structured as a chronological list of essential steps in the recruitment process, and are designed to provide a fair, equitable, consistent, documented and defensible system for hiring academics and to ensure that legal, human and individual rights are respected. Appendices that provide further information and examples are provided.

These guidelines should also assist units in their efforts to attract and retain members of designated groups that will further the University's goal of producing a diverse faculty. We ask the cooperation of those responsible for search processes in following not only the letter, but also the spirit, of the Employment Equity Policy. The Policy applies to all academic appointments, including the professionals, librarians, instructors, and counsellors. Every vacancy should be considered an opportunity to achieve Employment Equity goals.

We hope that these processes will enable units to attract, hire and retain an academic workforce that encompasses diversity and excellence.
